The Gathering
In search of water in the searing heat of the African plains, varied hoofed animal species emerge from the savannah and into your presence, transforming the viewer into either an intruder or part of the pack standing at waters edge. Like a metaphor for our times, "The Gathering" represents the power of biodiversity and how the instinctual differences between species are overcome in the need for sustenance and life. The richness of animal forms and patterns drive the viewers eye from left to right, flowing in the outlines of the zebras and gazelles, along their playful linear curvy antlers, visually reverberating with the roundness of the elephant's ears and trunk. Surprising elements come into play when on deeper inspection, one realizes that the giraffe is breaking the upper picture plain in amusing sureness as the white cranes wings direct one back to the gray elephant with white tusks, leading attention back into the flow of animal contours. Durwood takes the beauty of color, pattern and form and then infuses the visual with conceptual meaning, defining how the individual is part and parcel of a larger diverse group, living in harmony and co-existence within a local environment.
